چکیده

Optoacoustic imaging relies on the ultrasonic detection of pressure waves created after optical absorption. In this work we demonstrate imaging single red blood cells using an ultrasonic detection system at 200 and 400 MHz. ©2010 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (170.3880) Medical and biological imaging; (350.0350) Other areas of optics

In vivo flow speed measurement of capillaries by photoacoustic correlation spectroscopy.

We recently proposed photoacoustic correlation spectroscopy (PACS) and demonstrated a proof-of-concept experiment. Here we use the technique for in vivo flow speed measurement in capillaries in a chick embryo model. The photoacoustic microscopy system is used to render high spatial resolution and high sensitivity, enabling sufficient signals from single red blood cells. The probe beam size is c...

Spatially Fourier-encoded photoacoustic microscopy using a digital micromirror device.

We have developed spatially Fourier-encoded photoacoustic (PA) microscopy using a digital micromirror device. The spatial intensity distribution of laser pulses is Fourier-encoded, and a series of such encoded PA measurements allows one to decode the spatial distribution of optical absorption. The throughput and Fellgett advantages were demonstrated by imaging a chromium target. By using 63 spa...

Fast voice-coil scanning optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy.

We developed a photoacoustic imaging system that has real-time imaging capability with optical resolution. The imaging system is capable of scanning at 20 Hz over a 9 mm range and up to 40 Hz over a 1 mm scanning range. A focused laser beam provides a lateral resolution of 3.4 μm as measured in an optically nonscattering medium. Flows of micrometer-sized carbon particles or whole blood in a sil...

In vitro measurements of absolute blood oxygen saturation using pulsed near-infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy: accuracy and resolution.

Pulsed photoacoustic spectroscopy was used to measure blood oxygen saturation in vitro. An optical parametric oscillator laser system provided nanosecond excitation pulses over the wavelength range 740-1040 nm which were used to generate photoacoustic signals in a cuvette through which a saline suspension of red blood cells was circulated. The signal amplitude and the effective attenuation coef...

Bessel-beam Grueneisen relaxation photoacoustic microscopy with extended depth of field.

The short focal depth of a Gaussian beam limits the volumetric imaging speed of optical resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM). A Bessel beam, which is diffraction free, provides a long focal depth, but its side lobes deteriorate image quality when the Bessel beam is directly employed to excite photoacoustic (PA) signals in OR-PAM. We present a nonlinear approach based on the Grueneisen r...
